Motivating Secondary Students in an Online Learning Environment

The irony of my video presentation is that in it I mention how students lose motivation when they find the task to be too difficult. That was me up until about an hour ago, ready to call it all quits and just walk away from it, when I was finally able to pull the audio and slides together. That was after pairing down my original plans to something simple just to get it done. Regardless, I really enjoyed this project. It forced me find meaning from materials I had difficulty comprehending and provided me with the chance to synthesize prior knowledge of classroom instruction, skill instruction, and intervention strategies for the traditional high school with newly acquired knowledge of effective online instruction, environment, motivational strategies, and teaching in order to create a foundation for academic intervention for online high schools.

Here is what I have put together Motivating Secondary Students in an Online Learning Environment

Excellent presentation. Many of the points that you focused on:

* Give frequent, early, positive feedback that supports students' beliefs that they can do well.
* Ensure opportunities for students' success by assigning tasks that are neither too easy nor too difficult.
* Help students find personal meaning and value in the material.
* Create an atmosphere that is open and positive.
* Help students feel that they are valued members of a learning community.

met some of the criteria of my topic student retention. Motivation techniques and ques are core in student retention and maintaining a level of student interest.

I see motivation and retention as closely related if not the same. A student lacking and unable to find motivation will eventually stop hanging around the perimeter and just "go home". And, what we need to do to retain is to motivate so...

Dorothy, I like the way you designed your video window. This is very appealing and easy to read. I also like the way you distinguished between intrinsic/internal and extrinsic/external motivation and discussed some of the factors that influence both areas. ~C. Penny Penagraph

Great information. I have a question for you related to Mac products. I am an avid user of Mac, however, have not used Mobile Me. Do you feel that it is valuable to use?

I see that your presentation was available through this tool and wonder if it is worth the additional cost.

The information presented was very informative. You included strategies that could be used in any classroom. Motivating student is very important in online learning environment.

@Terry. I'm not really certain that the MobileMe is worth the money but I continue to renew it annually in order to hold on to my email address. However, when in a pinch, it comes in handy for storage purposes and for sharing music, podcasts, and video.

Dorothy,

This is a topic I think we need to have more discussion about in our schools. I think we do numerous things to de-motivate students. Well done!

i know I've demotivated students without that being my intention. I find that is easier to avoid doing when the materials are kept timely and relevant.
